Artist’s Statement: My inspiration for this piece was the roses in front of my house. Barbara always held whichever rose she picked tightly to her face, and wearily regarded the world with reddened eyes; she was a woman who could not love who she wanted freely in my community. On its own, love is hard, but without the community’s approval, it is even more difficult. Two people cannot build an entire world without support, a sad truth that makes finding your place as an LGBTQ person challenging and wearying.
