Artist’s Statement

“Dahlias” depicts a bouquet of vibrant flowers that were bought for Shabbat but have since begun to wilt. In my home, displaying fresh flowers is one way that we make Shabbat special, reminding us of renewal and growth. I chose to paint the flowers a few days after Shabbat, though they were no longer blooming as beautifully. Growth doesn’t happen in one day; as the work week begins again and the flowers from Shabbat begin to wilt, they serve as a reminder of the renewal that we focus on over Shabbat and of the growth that we should always strive for.
