Pacific Palisades Fire Damage

1. Low brick walls and a brick chimney are all that remain of a building that was hollowed out by the fire. Rubble and ash coat the ground surrounding the building.

2. Red corrugated roofing tile lies amidst rubble.

3. A scene of destruction, interrupted by a red brick chimney and palm trunks devoid of leaves.

4. All that remains of a truck is its metal frame, which has been blackened by soot, and a metal steering wheel, which has been stripped of its plastic casing.

5. View from a hilltop looking out over charred treetops. On the right are the charred remains of a stair lift—a type of mobility aid for stairs.

6. A brick fireplace surrounded by ash and debris.

7. A bare pine tree viewed through the charred, arched doorway of a house.

8. All that remains of a sedan is its metal frame, which is sinking into a pile of debris at the side of the road. The rusted color of the frame matches the rust-red dirt and bushes that surround it.

9. A metal shelter and brick fireplace stand tall over a junkyard of burned and distorted metal. The setting sun can be seen through silhouetted, fire-damaged trees.

10. A plastic playground, severely warped and discolored by the fire.

The minute that I heard about the Los Angeles fires, my photojournalistic instincts kicked in and I knew that I would forever regret not memorializing this history book–making event with my camera. Each photo is heartbreaking in a different way. Rebuilding will take years. Too many lives have been lost, and many more have been changed for the worse. Whether the fires were caused by arson, climate change, or other factors, we can’t look the other direction when it comes to tragic happenings.
