Artist’s Statement
“Encountering the End” is a deeply personal and evocative piece, created through a blend of innovative digital photography techniques and raw emotion. This photograph stems from a near-death experience when I almost drowned.
Using a digital camera and a long exposure, I crafted an image that captures the terror and surreal beauty of that moment. The low shutter speed allowed me to use a light wand to create fluid, wave-like movements, emulating the engulfing waters of my past. The resulting swirls of light create an ethereal yet haunting atmosphere, enveloping the central figures: myself and a skull, a stark symbol of death.
This photograph is more than just a creative exploration of light and shadow. It’s a catharsis, a way of confronting and understanding a moment when life and death intertwined. The image plays with notions of mortality and survival, inviting viewers to reflect on their own encounters with fear, danger, and the resilience of the human spirit. Through “Encountering the End,” I hope to connect with others, share a piece of my journey, and perhaps inspire resilience in the face of life’s most challenging waves.
