Family Portrait Series: Great Grandma Sally

Artist’s Statement: As my school became virtual because of COVID-19, and I was spending most of my summer break in my house with my parents, I channeled all of my emotions, disappointments, and excessive amount of free time into discovering more about my family history. I felt a need to connect with my ancestors, and I found comfort in learning about the lives they led and the traumas they overcame. After compiling old photographs, recipes, and passed-down stories from my mother—specifically about the women who came before me—I turned to my artwork. This piece is part of an audiovisual narrative and homage to the strong Jewish women in my family.
